EXHIBITIONS & AWARDS in BLUE

June 1 - July 13, 2007 / One Man Show - Wait Gallery (link) - This show includes a number of new pieces never exhibited before, most notably the new still lifes featuring ancient Native American pottery, and some small plein air and studio landscape work. Julie Wait is a talented interior designer in the region and has put together a very respectable small gallery in her offices in downtown Rogers, Arkansas. There was a nice wine & cheese reception on the opening night, and I was invited (impromptu!) to speak for a few minutes to a gathering of area designers. I guess I did okay... they laughed at the right times. One gentleman pointed out that in person I seemed to be very "type B", yet my art seemed to him very "type A". He found this a little confusing, I guess. I'm just this sort of frumpy bearded schmoe, which people maybe expect of an arteest, but my artwork is very straightforward, realistic, concerned with beauty and order. He sounded as if maybe he thought realist painters would work in a lab coat, or something. Interesting discussion.

April, 2007 - Terribly Exciting New Still Lifes - In a real sort of forehead-smacking moment of revelation, I finally thought to bring together my experience and long interest in archeology (and museums) and my fine art. I made some calls and e-mails to the University of Arkansas Archeological Survey (MANY thanks to Mary Suter) and arranged to gain access to their storage facility. They have been most accomodating, allowing me to pick out what artifacts I like, research, set up and photograph them. They have even provided a little space in their lab for me to work. I hope - once I get the nerve - to just go there and paint, but for now I am content to take a lot of photos. Truth is, I am a bit afraid I will be a distraction or get in the way of... you know - science. I am very excited about this new direction. I'm enthralled at all these ancient artifacts, and to be able to pick and choose and handle... well, I'm like a kid in a candy store. There is something very profound for me in painting these beautiful old vessels. They are simply fascinating. Many more paintings like "Caddo Jar" and "Fire Marked Jar" to come.

Oil Painters of America - I'm now an official OPA member since some time in February '07, and am linked on their website. I sent slides of Immaculate Heart and Bleu Cheese & Beer and was accepted by their membership panel. I am now preparing for some of their regional and national competitions.

March 17 - April 17, 2007 - Ozark Art Alliance Competitive Art Show - Winner, T. Yeckel Award - "Pomegranates & China Dish won the award, and "Apples & Oranges" was also accepted. Lance Hunter (a brilliant painter) of Tahlequa, OK, was the judge. He said Pomegranates contained "exquisite passages" and was "beautifully crafted", which is nice, since that is what I strive for. He gave a very good critique of all the art.

February 6, 2007 -Artist's Fellowship charity auction at John Brown University for the benefit of St. Francis Clinic in Siloam Springs, AR. This is a fairly new group of Christian artists, organized by Todd Williams. We have been meeting for over a year and this is the first show we have organized together. There will be an opening reception from 6 pm to 8 pm, Feb. 6 and the show will run through March 2.

February 1, 2007 - I am the featured speaker at the monthly meeting of the McDonald County Mainstream Arts Council. The event is being called a "Mock Gallery" with about a dozen of my original pieces being shown in a gallery-type setting, with wine & cheese. I will then give a short talk about my development as an artist. This will be at the Pineville, MO City Hall, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. I will also be giving away a signed reproduction of one of my paintings as a door prize. Thanks to Joyce Haynes for her work leading the Council, and for her creative energy in organizing the event.

January 7 - March 6, 2007 - Plein Air Painters of the Ozarks group show at The Vineyard, (3200 SW Regency Pkwy # 8, Bentonville, AR 72712 (479) 464-9463). Reception January 27th,

November 6, 2006 - Bentonville Fall Art Walk - Many thanks to my business host for the evening, Michele Hopman at Art Accents, as well as the event organizer Becky McCoy and Bob Workman and all the folks from Crystal Bridges Museum for providing a nice lunch for the artists. Crowds were smaller than expected, maybe due to chilly weather.

Nov. 7 - Dec. 15, 2006 - ANA Fall Regional Art Competition - A very high quality regional show with entries from ten states. "Apples and Rice Bowl" won an Award of Merit, which was a nice surprise, since it was probably the smallest piece in the show. MANY THANKS to Renee Goosetree, who actually loaned me back the painting so I could put it in the show (but that is a long story).

SEPTEMBER 30, 2006 - McDonald County ArtWalk - Pineville, MO - Great Artwalk! For a small town event, this was organized extremely well, and surprisingly was the most profitable artwalk I have ever participated in. I sold three pieces, including "Bleu Cheese and Beer" and "Apples and Rice Bowl". There were some very good cash prizes, as well as a variety of good live music and food.

JUNE 24-25, 2006 - First Group Plein Air Expedition - Camped, hiked and painted several locations along the Buffalo National River in Arkansas (to see some of the results, follow the "Paintings" link at left and then click on "Landscapes"). By coincidence we were just in time for the Jasper (AR) Elk Festival. The Ozark Cafe was jam-packed, but we got seated and fed very efficiently. Nice folks. I recommend the Sliced Brisket. Below are a couple of shots of me (left, mugging) and my buddy, Glenn (actually painting) , in our plein air frenzy. We hope to do this at least once a season. Feel free to join us... the more the merrier.

JUNE 19, 2006 - Bentonville Art Walk - 4:00-9:00 pm, in scenic downtown Bentonville, Arkansas. I was impressed with last year's art walk; live music, nice location, quality artwork, as well as lots of boxed wine and cheesy comestibles. A good crowd, too!

UPDATE -  The Bentonville Art Walk was a great success. The folks from the Crystal Bridges Museum project gave a nice luncheon for the artists. Sold "Body and   Blood" and had a steady stream of people looking at the art. A very well run and promoted show. Special thanks to realtor Johnny Haney, our host.
