Timothy Jones was born in 1960 and spent his first 14 years in Alaska, where he learned to appreciate the stark beauty of the Alaskan landscape. He developed an interest in art at an early age, and was encouraged by his parents, especially his mother, Jean, who was also an artist.
In 1975 the family moved to Black Rock, Arkansas, where Tim finished high school. In 1979 he earned his first college art scholarship, attending Southern Baptist College in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas.
He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Arkansas State University in 1984, having earned a number of scholarships and awards. The numerous live figure classes were especially helpful in developing his drawing skills.
Later that year, Timothy and his wife, Martha, moved to Northwest Arkansas where he entered graduate studies in the Art Department at the University of Arkansas' Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. While at the U of A, Tim taught art courses as a graduate teaching assistant, and was also asked to teach a core fundamentals course in drawing for art majors, something that a graduate student had never done before. He received his Master of Fine Arts degree from the U of A in 1987.
After graduation, Tim immediately found employment as a designer and illustrator. He worked in the corporate world, as well as freelance, for the next 15 years. With the birth of their first child, Tim and Martha decided that he would stay home to provide care for the baby. He changed diapers by day, and worked on freelance projects while the family slept.
In 2004, the urge to return to his fine art roots became too strong, and Tim opened Green Leaf Fine Art Gallery and Studio in Rogers, Arkansas (click the link at left to find out more about Green Leaf Gallery).
With the opening of Green Leaf Gallery, Tim made a commitment to painting full-time. One of the tremendous unexpected benefits of the gallery was the opportunity to meet the successful and accomplished artists who worked in the area. Jeff Legg, Todd Williams and Timothy C. Tyler all lived within "rock throwing distance" of the gallery. Tim's association with these artists, as well as other members of the art community, allowed him the greatest opportunity for growth that he had seen since his first college art classes. Tim was encouraged that all these artists were enjoying success by building on the great artistic traditions of 19th century Europe, rather than reacting against them.
In time, Tim realized that the demands of operating and marketing a commercial art gallery, in addition to teaching art lessons, left little time for painting. With all the positive response to his new work, he decided to close Green Leaf Gallery and paint in his studio full-time.
With new enthusiasm, Tim has been building a portfolio of work in the "classical realist" style. Though working in this way for only a year, his art has already received local, regional and national recognition. In February of 2005, Tim's painting "Blue Vase with Plums" was chosen as a finalist in the Art Renewal Center's 2005 International Salon, a competition that drew 1500 entries from over 30 countries.
